Scottish Surfing has received an Outstanding rating for its governance structure in the latest sportscotland audit, marking a significant milestone for the organisation and the wider Scottish sporting community.

Recognition of Excellence

The independent review, carried out by BDO on behalf of sportscotland, assessed Scottish Surfing against the UK Code for Sports Governance. The audit covered five key areas: Structure, People, Communication, Standards & Conduct, and Policies & Procedures. While most areas were rated the second highest category rating of Good, Scottish Surfing achieved the top rating of Outstanding for its governance structure, a reflection of strong oversight, effective leadership, and a clear organisational framework.

Shaping the Future of Governance

Prior to the audit, and in recognition of the transformation of Scottish Surfing’s governance, the SGB has been asked by sportscotland to play a unique role in shaping the future of governance audits across all Scottish Governing Bodies. Working with newly appointed auditors BDO, Scottish Surfing has contributed directly to the development of a new audit process designed to ensure impact, consistency, and value for public investment through Scottish Sport.

This recognition not only highlights Scottish Surfing’s leadership and governance but also ensures that its expertise will influence best practice across the entire sporting sector in Scotland.

Commitment to Transparency and Growth

The audit also noted examples of good practice across Scottish Surfing’s operations, from inclusive governance and risk management to community engagement initiatives delivered through the Surfing for Life strategy.

Looking Ahead

Scottish Surfing’s recognition as both a high-performing governing body and a trusted advisor in the shaping of governance frameworks is an important step for the sport. It reflects a deep commitment to accountability, transparency, and long-term sustainability.

By achieving Outstanding and helping to design the audit framework for all Scottish Governing Bodies, Scottish Surfing is not only raising the bar for its own sport but also strengthening confidence in the way public investment supports the future of Scottish sport.
