Let’s go!
Want to take part. But don’t know where to start? Don’t worry, we’ve got you!
We want everyone to experience the fun and excitement of our sport, but in a safe and inclusive way. Our participation pathway looks like this:
For beginners at entry level, it is recommended that you take a surfing lesson with an Accredited Surf School. Our surf schools can provide the correct equipment, safety guidance and professional instruction to help you progress to standing on your first waves as quickly and safely as possible.
Should you wish to go on to purchase your own equipment, you will be able to find something suitable at our Scottish Surfing Affiliated Businesses with your member discounts.
There are Scottish Surfing Affiliated Surf Clubs across the country that can be found, and joined, via the Scottish Surfing JustGo member management system.
Our clubs are spread out throughout Scotland and provide a range of different activities. Your local club will provide an opportunity to meet surfers of a similar ability, find people to go surfing together with safely or to progress your level of surfing through competition in the hopes of being part of the club team or squad.
The club program is often the first step for most people who wish to get into competitive surfing.
Scottish Surfing also has a University Surf Club Membership Scheme where universities can access free Scottish Surfing memberships on sign-up. Affiliated University Surf Clubs can also participate in our Scottish Universities Surfing Championships, held annually.
Surfing has a long and proud history in Scotland with some of the best breaks in northern Europe. The sport has come a long way from its early pioneers in the 1960’s and the exceptional environments that Scotland provides for taking part in its multiple disciplines has resulted in an ever-increasing number of people involved from its humble beginnings over 70 years ago.
In addition to its pristine natural environments, Scotland will shortly showcase another world class facility – the Lost Shore Surf Resort. This will be the largest inland wave pool within Northern Europe and at £56 Million build cost over a 60-acre site, the largest capital investment of any sporting complex in the last 10 years since the construction of the Commonwealth Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
Scottish Surfing aspires to build on these national and international opportunities through sustainable and managed growth of the sport with our partners across multiple areas (tourism, economy, research and development etc) for the wider benefit of our surfing communities. Join us!
A full history of surfing in Scotland can be found with Malcolm Findlay and Andy Bennetts’ 2023 book ‘Surfing Scotland’.
