Insurance might not be as exciting as a perfect swell, but having the right protection in place matters when something goes wrong. That’s why Scottish Surfing has significantly strengthened the insurance included with membership and club affiliation for 2026/27 — at no additional cost to members or clubs.
Previously, members benefited from third-party liability cover. The new arrangements provide broader protection for individual members, while also bringing affiliated clubs and their volunteers under Scottish Surfing’s centrally arranged insurance.
What’s improved?
The Public Liability limit has increased from £2 million to £5 million.
This cover protects against eligible claims involving accidental injury to another person or accidental damage to their property arising from covered Scottish Surfing and affiliated-club activities.
Registered members now receive personal liability protection.
Individual members are included as insured persons when taking part in activities connected with Scottish Surfing or an affiliated club, provided they are following the relevant rules and procedures. This provides an important layer of protection if a member becomes legally liable following a covered incident.
Public Liability cover has been extended to affiliated clubs.
Our affiliated clubs are now included within Scottish Surfing’s centrally arranged Public Liability insurance. For the activities covered by the policy, clubs no longer need to purchase a separate Public Liability policy of their own.
That means less duplication, less administration and a potentially significant saving for clubs — while maintaining a consistent standard of protection across the Scottish surfing community.
Directors and Officers cover now extends to affiliated clubs.
Running a surf club brings responsibilities, particularly for the volunteers and committee members making decisions behind the scenes. Our Directors and Officers insurance has therefore also been extended to affiliated clubs.
The policy provides up to £2 million of cover for eligible claims arising from alleged wrongful acts carried out by directors, officers and committee members in their management or supervisory roles. This gives the volunteers who keep our clubs running an important additional layer of reassurance.
New Personal Accident protection for members.
The package also includes Group Personal Accident insurance, with capital benefits of up to £10,000 for specified serious injuries resulting from a covered accident. While no insurance can prevent an accident, this cover can provide valuable financial support when it is needed most.
A stronger foundation for Scottish surfing
Together, these improvements mean better protection for members, stronger support for affiliated clubs and greater reassurance for the volunteers who give their time to our sport.
Most importantly, all of this has been achieved without increasing the cost of membership or club affiliation.
We want Scottish Surfing membership to deliver genuine value — in the water, on the beach and behind the scenes. This enhanced insurance package is another important step towards building a stronger, safer and more sustainable surfing community across Scotland.
