What Is Bodyboarding?
Bodyboarding is an exciting, accessible, and hugely rewarding way to ride waves. It’s one of the most versatile surf crafts out there — perfect for beginners enjoying small, friendly waves, yet capable of supporting elite athletes performing powerful, gymnastic manoeuvres on serious, heavy surf.
The sport truly comes into its own in steep, fast, and powerful waves that can be challenging to stand‑up surf, giving bodyboarders a unique advantage and a thrilling connection to the ocean. For many people, bodyboarding is their first taste of wave‑riding, and from that first moment you can take the sport as far as you want.
Bodyboards can be ridden in several styles: prone (lying down), drop‑knee (half‑standing), on your knees, or even stand‑up. Competitions around the world celebrate all these disciplines — showcasing just how diverse and creative bodyboarding can be.
Why Bodyboard?
- It’s fun, fast, and accessible for all ages
- It’s safe and beginner‑friendly, yet offers huge progression
- It thrives in Scottish conditions — especially our powerful reef and beach breaks
- It’s a welcoming community with room for everyone
- It encourages fitness, ocean awareness, and confidence

What Equipment Do You Need?
Bodyboards are generally made from polyethylene or polypropylene, with an average length of around 42 inches. Riders can adjust board size and materials to suit their height, weight, and the water temperatures they surf in. Unlike hard surfboards, bodyboards are made from softer materials, reducing the risk of injury and making them ideal for newcomers and experienced riders alike.
Short‑blade swim fins (flippers) designed specifically for surf are essential. Diving fins won’t provide the right power or control. Surf fins help you catch waves, generate speed, and move efficiently through the line-up. Comfort is key, and fin tethers are important to prevent losing them in strong waves.
Where Can I Learn?
We’ll be highlighting events, “come and try” sessions, and surf schools across Scotland that offer bodyboarding lessons and coaching. Whether you’re completely new or looking to progress your skills, there will be opportunities to get involved and join the growing Scottish bodyboarding community.
Who Are We?
We are the current Bodyboard Committee for Scottish Surfing — Paul, Aristee, and Josh, and others passionate about developing the sport. Our aim is to raise the profile of bodyboarding in Scotland, support newcomers, encourage young riders, and help elevate performance levels across the country.
