Highlights from the SUP Surf Championships: A Day of Thrills and Talent!

The SUP Surf Championships took place under challenging weather conditions that tested the skills of every competitor. With strong easterly winds creating a direct onshore wind, the surf conditions were less than ideal. However, in true sporting spirit, the event found its footing by moving from West Sands to East Sands, a decision made at 11:00AM after consultation with our dedicated surf judges. This change allowed us to provide the competitors with a more suitable venue with slightly better conditions for an enjoyable and competitive event.

The championships kicked off with the international men’s competition, featuring Jonathan McCutcheon and Clive Wright, both from the north east of England. It was a tricky start for them, as the unpredictable North Sea conditions didn’t allow for prior observation of the surf. In a straight final, Clive emerged victorious, and both advanced to compete in the overall showdown alongside the top two from the Scottish Championships.

In the international women’s division, we witnessed an exciting showdown, with Welsh competitor Emily Evans. It was fantastic to see crossover with the sup race community with England’s Annabel Page in action. Georgie Page also came to take park part and showed her true water skills in the conditions. Saana Balfour also competed here living locally in Fife.

On the Scottish men’s side, competitors were split into two semi-finals, and only the top two from each would progress to the final. Ed Nimmons, who showcased his prowess in the challenging surf, secured victory with excellent wave scores. Jonathan Sherwin, who won all of last year’s SUP race events and has competed at the ISA worlds, claimed second place, showcasing his consistent talent.

The female division featured a thrilling showdown between Aberdeen neighbors Beth Woodall and Frankie Alcock, with Beth taking home the win, adding another highlight to an already thrilling day.

To crown it all off, we held an overall final known as “The Showdown,” which featured both international and Scottish finalists. Ed Nimmons proved his skill once again, winning the overall showdown, while Saana Balfour triumphed in the women’s category.

Despite the wild weather, the SUP Surf Championships was a day filled with excitement, determination, and impressive performances. Here’s to the competitors who braved the elements and showcased their passion for the sport—we can’t wait for next year’s event!

A huge thank you goes out to the incredible photographer Raymond Leinster for capturing the day’s action, beach lifeguard Lisa MacGregor for ensuring everyone’s safety, and all the judges whose expertise made the event possible. Thanks to Scottish Surfings Mr Media Rob Elliot for running socials for the day and SUP Lead Ally Findlay for running and organising the days event.
