School to Surf
The Scottish Surfing Federation is looking to bring surfing into schools across the country through an innovative new surfskate programme.
West Lothian schools will be among the first in the country to take part in the innovative ‘school to surf programme’ which will culminate with a session at Lost Shore Surf Resort in December.
The pilot project, fully funded by the SSF, is taking place at Calderwood Primary in East Calder and is aimed at establishing a pathway into the sport for those children who do not take part in traditional sports or activities.
As one of the closest schools to Lost Shore Surf Resort, Calderwood Primary School was chosen to participate in the innovative programme that will use surfskate in a school setting to provide the foundation for a pathway to surfing.
Paul Stark, CEO of the Scottish Surfing Federation said:
“The SSF is absolutely delighted to be providing this piloting programme to bring surfing into schools in Scotland.
“Thanks to the support of Active Schools, The Surfskate Academy and Lost Shore Surf Resort we have a programme that will inspire, encourage and provide a pathway for participation in surfing in Scotland.”
In addition, the pilot programme also includes involvement from Edinburgh Napier University who are providing support to evidence the impact of the pilot programme in terms of objective measures how it develops balance and movement skills and subjective measures how these sports can build confidence and well-being.
