The four stops of the 2024 Scottish Surfing Junior Series were:
- Stop 1 – Tiree – May
- Stop 2 – Dunnet Bay – August
- Stop 3 – Pease Bay (held at Coldingham) – September
- Stop 4 – Sandend – October
The goal of the Junior Series is to give our developing juniors as much competition time as possible, in order to compete against each other and in doing so raising the bar to be able to compete more effectively on the International stage in years to come. The year of 2024 has seen a huge progression in the quality of surfing in the Scottish Junior ranks, and the Scottish Surfing Junior Series – supported by Cskins, Robie and Bulldog, is where the kids got to show us all what they can do. Across the 4 events participation was up on previous years and the quality of the events continued to evolve.
The Junior National Championships, held on the Isle of Tiree in May, doubled as Stop 1. Great conditions were offered up in this wonderful location (although it could have done with being a little less windy) with Junior National Champions being crowned (earning their first Junior Series points in doing so). A huge thank you must go out to the host club Blackhouse Watersports and the principal event sponsor, Kings Interhigh. The logistics involved with hosting this event, given its location and ensuring that the actual event was fully mobile in order to react to the changing conditions, was immense.
Stop 2 came at the beautiful Dunnet Bay, on the North Coast of Scotland, in August. This event was hosted by North Shore Surf Club and conditions on the day were excellent, with a great “Social” down at the club hut at Thurso East in the evening. Great conditions were delivered with great surfing on show across the board.
Belhaven Surf Club hosted Stop 3 in September, with what proved to be the most challenging event of The Series to hold. The event was called on after a forecast that the organisers were confident would produce a competitive wave however conditions on the day of the comp were poor and quick thinking to be able to continue the event was needed. The decision was made to move the whole event to Coldingham Bay, 15 miles down the road. Coldingham requires a very specific set of conditions and we were very lucky that this day provided them. Big thanks need to go to the RNLI team at Coldingham, all the locals and Steve at St Veda’s for helping us to pull off the event with zero notice.
The final stop of The Series was held at Sandend on the Moray Firth in mid-October and was hosted by Sandend Surf Club. After having to postpone for a week, the new date delivered what everyone has now come to expect from this great beach. A great comp in epic conditions and an ideal setting was a great way to wrap up The Series.
The final standings are as follows, with Series prizes provided by Cskins, Robie and Bulldog awarded after the Sandend Comp.
